2. Use a sharp pencil to draw a diagonal line on the back of the light-colored square. Fig. B

3. Sew on both sides of the line, using a ¼˝ seam allowance. Fig. C

4. Cut on the pencil line. Fig. D

5. Press the seams open or toward the darker fabric, whichever you prefer. Fig. E

6. Trim the block. For example, if you start with a large 5˝ × 5˝ square, trim the block down to 4½˝ × 4½˝, which will yield a 4˝ finished half-square triangle block. Follow the directions in the trimming table (previous page) for specific cutting and trimming sizes. Each pair of squares will yield 2 half-square triangle blocks. Fig. F
